Originally from Brownsville, Texas, J. Stuart Chaney is an associate handling civil litigation and eminent domain matters.  He focuses his practice on representing and protecting Texas property owners facing contract disputes, condemnation, and eminent-domain lawsuits.  He has handled cases involving the condemnation of ranches, homes, restaurants, convenience stores, and gas stations.  He regularly assists Texas landowners against takings by the State of Texas, oil and gas companies, pipeline companies, and electric transmission line companies.

Stu graduated from the University of Kansas in 2008 with a B.A. in Political Science.  He then spent time working for the Texas House of Representatives as a legislative assistant and assistant committee clerk and taught business English to corporate executives in Barcelona, Spain. Stu started with the firm as an intern in 2012 before attending The University of Kansas School of Law, where he graduated in 2016.  While in law school, he worked for the District Attorneys’ Offices in both Lawrence and Kansas City, Kansas. As a law student, under a provisional license from the Kansas Supreme Court allowing him to represent the State in court, Stu gained valuable courtroom experience on a weekly basis, prosecuting multiple bench trials to verdict. After law school, Stu returned to the firm’s Austin office as an associate. He is admitted to practice in Texas (2017), is a member of the Austin Bar Association and the Austin Young Lawyers Association.
